American Farmland Trust has deep roots in New York, where AFT played a critical role in establishing the State’s Farmland Protection Program in 1996 – catalyzing a wave of land trusts conserving farmland across the state. Since then, more than 120,000 acres of farmland have been protected, but the work is far from finished. New York lost 363,885 acres (5%) of farmland between 2017 and 2022 alone, and New Jersey, the Garden State, lost 22,582 acres (3%) in that same time period according to the 2022 Ag Census.
While AFT continues to lead statewide efforts for farmland protection, we have recognized new and growing challenges facing farmers and our food system. AFT is working tirelessly to support farmers in our region through programs that address everything from soil health, farmland access and transfer, and issues specifically faced by women in agriculture, to promoting farm viability through farm to institution, smart solar, and advocacy for policies and practices that help save the land that sustains us.
This work is critical to the long-term viability of our farms and resilient local food systems. Your support is needed now more than ever. Will you join us?
