The U.S. Senate hopes to hold a vote on the Build Back Better Act before the end of 2021. However, the future of this agricultural funding is anything but certain. In order for the Act to pass with this support for conservation, your senators, especially Democratic senators, need to hear from you as soon as possible.

I am a constituent writing today to encourage you to maintain the proposed $28 billion investment in agricultural conservation programs as part of the Build Back Better Act. Farm Bill conservation programs are critical to helping farmers and ranchers fight climate change while also protecting farmland, increasing productivity, building soil health, and improving water quality. However, these highly popular programs are consistently oversubscribed, causing many applicants to be turned away. As a result, farmers are unable to take steps to address climate change and protect their land through programs such as the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, Conservation Stewardship Program, Regional Conservation Partnership Program, Agricultural Conservation Easement Program, and conservation technical assistance. The pandemic illustrated how critical our nation’s farms and farmland are to our food security. Continued extreme weather underscores the need to support farmers and ranchers in adopting measures to reduce the impacts of drought and excessive rain events on their crops and livestock. The Build Back Better Act represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make the types of conservation investments that will help improve climate resiliency, while also sequestering carbon and putting our nation’s farmers and ranchers on a sustainable path to success. Thank you so much for your consideration of this request, and for all you do to support farmers and ranchers in our state.
