Since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, a lot has changed. A global pandemic, war, supply chain disruptions, inflation, extreme weather, renewed attention to systemic inequity, and other events have altered our lives and priorities in countless ways.

Never has there been a greater need to build a more resilient farm and food system with programs and policies that advance farm viability, benefit rural communities, support greater diversity and equity, protect critical farmland acres, and combat climate change.

I care deeply about strengthening our rural communities, building a more resilient food supply chain, and ensuring that farmers and ranchers have the tools they need to protect their land from development and combat climate change. For this reason, I wanted to share with you my support for American Farmland Trust's critical recommendations for the 2023 Farm Bill. The 2023 Farm Bill is our best chance to address the challenges facing our farmers and ranchers, the rural economies they underpin, and the food system that families like mine depend on. To do that, we must help more farmers and ranchers permanently protect their land, establish secure land tenure, build viable businesses, and adopt conservation practices. AFT has over 40 years of experience shaping federal policy and spent the last six months gathering input from over 300 farmers, ranchers, non-profit leaders, and other stakeholders through workshops held across the country to develop its recommendations.
